Roskilde / Denmark

Once the capital of Denmark, Roskilde oozes of history and is a must for anyone with a knack for Vikings. With its picturesque location by the fjord and its rich historical heritage, Roskilde is a perfect day trip from Copenhagen only 30 minutes away. The Roskilde Cathedral, built in a brick Gothic style, is the city's main monument, the largest cathedral in Denmark, and the site of the tombs of most Danish sovereigns from the Middle Ages to the present day. I also highlight the Viking Ship Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art (the Roskilde Mansion, also known as Roskilde Palace and as the Yellow Mansion, a former royal Baroque mansion in central Roskilde, Denmark). The RAGNAROCK Museum for pop, rock and youth culture, is also a place of interest and, it seems incredible, but every year this city hosts a huge music festival called Roskilde Festival, one of the largest music festivals in Europe and, as far as I have read, the largest in the Nordic countries.
